Did You Know? The Triple Crown races have been around long before the series received its notable name. After the first winner it was until a few years later some journalists started using the term Triple Crown to reference to the major three races beginning as early as 1923. When it was won for the second time journalist Charles Hatton of the Daily Racing Form put the name to common use.
