This decade would welcome the College Football Playoff and see the end of the BCS era or Bowl Championship Series where there was a selection system that created five bowl games involving the top ten teams in division 1 with the top ten teams being chosen and matched up. The top two teams would be chosen to play for the National Championship. This began in 1998 succeeding the Bowl Alliance that ran from 1995-1997.
