Did You Know? Running backs are important player on the field. Their main job is carrying the ball up down the field earning them many nicknames whether it’s their physical ability or a popular culture reason or reference. Twenty-three running backs have been selected first overall in the NFL. The only position to have more than that is the quarterback position with 28 first overall draft picks. The last rookie running back to lead the NFL in rushing was Edgerrin “Edge” James in 1999. While his nickname is a shortened version of his first name, some might say it’s also a reference to his dangerous running skills — taking off out on the edge.
