Did You Know? Yachting’s most prestigious prize is ‘The Auld Mug” and is also the oldest trophy in international sport, but the silver trophy isn’t impressively valuable itself. Bought by Henry William Paget, 1st Marquess of Anglesey, off the shelf at Garrard in 1851 for 100 sovereigns and used as a trophy for the new £100 Cup around the Isle of Wight. It was renamed the America Cup after being won by a boat called America. The trophy would remain in the United States despite being challenged 24 times. Which marked the longest winning streak in the history of sport, until the Australia II became the first successful challenger in 1983.
