The Trophy was originally commissioned in 1892 and original had the name ‘Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup” The trophy is named for Lord Stanley Preston who was the Governor General of Canada who donated the trophy as an award to Canadas top ranked amateur ice hockey club the First cup awarded in 1893 to the Montreal Hockey Club.
