The Invention of Everyday Tech We Take for Granted

Did you know that the first version of the modern microwave oven was invented by accident? In 1945, Percy Spencer, an engineer at Raytheon, noticed something peculiar while working with radar technology.
He was testing a magnetron, a type of vacuum tube that produces microwave radiation, when he discovered that the chocolate bar in his pocket had melted.
Intrigued, Spencer experimented by placing popcorn kernels near the magnetron, which quickly popped. This serendipitous discovery led Spencer and his team to develop the first microwave oven, initially called the “Radarange.”
The early models were bulky and expensive, primarily used in commercial kitchens, but over time, microwave ovens became more compact and affordable, finding their way into millions of homes worldwide.
Today, the microwave oven is a staple of modern kitchens, revolutionizing the way we heat and cook food, all thanks to a melted chocolate bar.
