The origins and global spread of extreme sports like parkour
Did you know that parkour, often considered a modern and extreme sport, has its origins rooted in early 20th-century France?
The discipline was influenced by Georges Hébert, a French naval officer who developed a training method known as “la méthode naturelle” after being inspired by the agile movements he observed in indigenous people during his travels.
Fast forward to the 1980s and 1990s, and we see this training philosophy evolve into the urban sport of parkour, thanks largely to David Belle, who sought to adapt Hébert’s techniques to the urban environment.
Parkour quickly gained international traction, fueled by viral videos showcasing spectacular jumps and fluid movements, and has now spread globally as both a recreational activity and a professional sport, celebrated for its artistry, physical discipline, and philosophical approach to overcoming obstacles.
