The Origins of the Paralympic Games

Did you know that the origins of the Paralympic Games can be traced back to a small event organized for British World War II veterans?
In 1948, on the same day as the opening ceremony of the London Olympics, Dr. Ludwig Guttmann, a pioneering neurologist, organized the first Stoke Mandeville Games at a hospital in England.
This competition featured just 16 injured servicemen and women, who participated in archery—an event chosen for its therapeutic benefits.
Dr. Guttmann’s vision was to use sports as a means of rehabilitation and empowerment, a concept that resonated deeply and gradually grew in scale.
By 1960, the first official Paralympic Games were held in Rome, featuring 400 athletes from 23 countries.
From these humble beginnings, the Paralympic Games have evolved into a global movement, showcasing extraordinary athletic achievements and promoting inclusivity and inspiration worldwide.
