Cities Built Underground

Did you know that some of the most intriguing cities in the world are actually built underground?
One of the most famous examples is the ancient city of Derinkuyu in Turkey, which dates back to around the 8th century BCE. This multi-level marvel extends approximately 85 meters (about 279 feet) beneath the Earth’s surface.
It was ingeniously carved out of volcanic rock, providing shelter for up to 20,000 people along with their livestock and food stores.
The city features complex ventilation shafts, wells, and even sophisticated security mechanisms, such as massive stone doors that could be rolled into place to seal off areas from invaders.
Underground cities like Derinkuyu were constructed not only for protection against natural disasters and attacks but also to endure extreme weather conditions, showcasing the remarkable adaptability and engineering prowess of ancient civilizations.
