The oddest jobs that existed in the past but are now obsolete
Did you know that before alarm clocks became widely used, people employed “knocker-uppers” to wake them up at the desired time?
These early human alarms were particularly common in Britain and Ireland during the Industrial Revolution and the early 20th century.
Knocker-uppers would roam the streets in the early hours, armed with long sticks or pea shooters, tapping on bedroom windows until they were sure the person inside was awake.
Some even used soft hammers or batons to ensure they wouldn’t break the glass.
This peculiar profession may seem odd today, but it played a crucial role in a time when punctuality was essential for factory workers and other laborers.
As alarm clocks became more affordable and reliable, the need for knocker-uppers faded, making this quirky job a fascinating relic of the past.
