Foods Named After Places (and Whether They’re Really From There)

According to local lore, villagers in the Meuse Valley of Belgium were frying small fish to eat, but during harsh winters when fishing was impossible, they turned to potatoes instead.
When American soldiers tasted them during World War I, they called them “French” fries, mistakenly attributing them to France because French was the dominant language in that part of Belgium.
