Saban attended Kent State in 1970 where he played defensive back for the Kent State Golden Flashes under coach Don James. In 1973, he graduated from Kent State University with a bachelor's degree in business. He and a roommate avoided being part of the Kent State shootings, on May 4, 1970, when they decided to eat lunch before walking to the rally area. In 1975, Saban earned his master's degree in sports administration from Kent State.
