Who is credited with developing the first successful smallpox vaccine?

Did you know that the concept of immunization dates back over a thousand years?

Long before the discovery of the smallpox vaccine by Edward Jenner in 1796, ancient practices laid the groundwork for modern immunology.

In 10th century China, practitioners used a method called variolation, where they deliberately exposed healthy individuals to material taken from the sores of smallpox sufferers.

This early form of immunization aimed to induce a mild case of the disease and provide immunity.

Though risky, variolation significantly reduced mortality rates compared to natural smallpox infections.

Jenner’s later development of the smallpox vaccine using cowpox virus revolutionized this practice, offering a safer and more effective means of protection and paving the way for the eradication of smallpox in 1980.
